Day 24 of the Kindness Challenge!

Day 24: Following up

How did your child's previous day's activities go? Whatever you encouraged them about, ask how it went, then further encourage (or comfort) them as needed: "I'm glad you had that conversation with your history teacher yesterday. That shows a lot of initiative." "I know you're disappointed that you weren't on the starting rotation, honey. But you are working hard to improve, and that's a great quality about you."

Coach's Corner: Sometimes, commiserating during disappointments is just as much a type of affirmation as cheering successes. The key is knowing whether the other person just wants you to listen to their feelings rather than fix the reason for the disappointment (which is often the case for women, girls, and boys), or whether, in the face of disappointment, they feel like a failure and inadequate and simply need to know you believe in them (especially men and older teenage boys).
