Day 17: Laugh alongside your child
Find a way to laugh with your child today. Is there a funny television show they really enjoy watching? A hilarious online video? Set aside your tasks for just 20 minutes and enjoy something funny together. If TV or videos are not their thing, tell your child about something funny or embarrassing that happened to you today at the store. Chances are, you'll soon hear from them about a funny encounter they experienced too.
Coach's Corner: Is it easier today, than earlier in the Challenge, to figure out something that would be interesting to your child? That's because you are "learning" them. If it isn't yet easier, use this as a prompt to get more serious about studying your kiddo. The research found that in most cases, doing so becomes second nature and yields a host of benefits for the relationship.
"The act of forcing themselves not to be negative, to find and say praiseworthy things, and to be generous each day had an unexpected side effect: [those who did the Challenge] suddenly were attuned to the other person's point of view. Without really intending to, they found that they were putting themselves in the other person's shoes."
