Day 23: Reciprocity in action
In the past few weeks or months, what is one positive thing your coworker has said or done for you? A short phrase of affirmation? ("Good job.") An act of generosity, like giving their time to review a document for you, or sponsoring your kid in that race? Or perhaps ... simply not criticizing you when they might have otherwise? Whatever it was, it likely indicates that type of action would be meaningful for them. Do a similar type of action for them today (or at the next opportunity) and see if it brings a positive return in your work relationship.
Coach's Corner: Dr. Gary Chapman's book The Five Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace demonstrates that people tend to give the type of appreciation they want to receive. Use your person's actions as a signal to discover what is important to them; log it in your notebook to remind you to give it more often.
