Day 10 of the Kindness Challenge!

Day 10: Below the surface

Regardless of age, kids want to be accepted by their peers. A lot of this has to do with their appearance. For younger children it may be about their tennis shoes or backpacks. Older kids obsess over their hair, weight, and clothes.

So find things about your child's appearance that are attractive and/or cool and let them hear it from you. But also mention of the beautiful aspects of your child's character. "You are so beautiful, honey – inside and out. I was so proud of you for standing up to those bullies at school yesterday." "Bud, you're a great athlete. But that means more than being fit. Thank you for your honesty about that umpire's call at the game today. I love to see you telling the truth—especially when it is not easy."

Coach's Corner: As you practice giving praise, it impacts you just as much as it does your child.

"Purposeful praise is the antidote to the human tendency to focus on what we don't have rather than what we do. It is the prescription for becoming content and happy no matter our situation."
