Day 6 of The Kindness Challenge

Day 6: Move on from mistakes

We all blow it, sometimes. That includes your child. Mistakes are sure to be made and regretted.

So when your child comes home with a doozy of a bad grade on this week's test, do something unexpected to lighten up the situation. Realize that your child probably already feels lousy and embarrassed, even if they don't show it.  Teens, especially, often hide their real emotions. So load them up in your car and head to a favorite coffee shop or a movie. Indulging in something fun has a way of turning bad days into better ones. Afterwards, assure them that you believe in them, that you know that they will work hard to resolve the problem, and things will soon be back on track.

Coach's Corner: Avoid the temptation to correct or criticize (e.g. "But next time you'll have to study a lot earlier.") That sort of corrective statement can come later—after your child sees your unconditional support – and only if absolutely necessary. Timing is the key.

(And what is under your temptation to criticize, anyway? Take this quick Negativity Assessment and find out.)

Bonus Video: This short bonus video from Shaunti also helps us "see" and catch our previously unseen unkindness.
