Day 16: Pump up the praise!
What does your child do especially well? Are they gifted in art? Show off their latest creation in simple frames around your home. Are they good at building or putting things together? Talk it up when you have guests joining you around the dinner table. Does your child play a sport or musical instrument? Be sure and mention their efforts to a friend when your kids are in earshot. Praise does wonders for boosting self-esteem – and in front of others, it is especially powerful.
Coach's Corner: Affirming your child in public usually magnifies the impact of your praise. As long as it is sincere and appropriate to the situation, even the shyest or most humble child deeply appreciates being bragged on every now and then. (Just make sure your friends don't see it as you bragging!)
If you're keeping a gift journal, write down not only your public brag, but the reaction you saw from your child when you said those affirming things.
